Meet the Maker – Decor Me

Hello lovely peeps, HUGE apologies as I have been a bit slack in my beloved “Meet the Maker” series of late with all my Bazaar preparations, but I am super excited for this month’s gorgeous maker Angela from Decor Me.

Decor Me is a divine handmade brand created by Angela from Sydney who has become known for her beautiful wooden doll stackers which are made of Tasmanian oak and using non toxic paint and natural sealants. They make the perfect toy for small hands!

Not only that but Angela is a whizz at homewares too creating gorgeous concrete tealight holders, jewellery holders and magnets!

I had the pleasure of meeting Angela at a Mums with Hustle luncheon and adored her passion for wooden toys and all things handmade. I took the opportunity to get to know her and her beautiful brand a little more.

Meet the Maker  – Angela Sibley:

Décor Me is a gorgeous kids décor and homewares range, designed and handcrafted, tell us the story behind Décor Me?

I have always had a passion to create, and live a creative life. I grew up watching and helping Dad create many different things around the home, and work wonders with his hands with an array of amazing grains of wood; so much that I fell in love with working with wood at an early age. I also majored in arts and woodwork in secondary school, however didn’t realise what to do with the skills I’d learnt or where it might take me.

I finally had the opportunity whilst on maternity leave, to rediscover my creative side by having this as a little me time, and a much needed outlet; Decor Me has all flourished from there! I believe my girls helped lead me to my dream.

You are a mama to twins, how old are they and how do you keep them entertained whilst you work?

Preparation and organisation is key! They are very busy and highly energetic 2 1/2 year old twin girls. Thankfully they have a love for ‘the creative’ including craft, painting, drawing, and often join me at the dining table whilst I hustle away! They will easily sit there for an hour! Yay! I am only able to work during small windows of time throughout the day and during these times I set up little stations around the house with things to occupy them.

To be completely honest it can be very difficult some days, particularly trying to find enough time for the creative side whilst wearing the many hats you wear as a mother and wife, however in the end you just do what you have to do and you see multitasking at its finest!

My days are often unpredictable and I find myself working late into the evenings to ensure that the activities I need to complete are completed before I put my head on the pillow. I think I’m almost at the stage where I need an extra set of hands around the house… time to get a nanny!

What did you do before having kids and how has having children changed your career ambitions and dreams?

I wasn’t sure what direction to head with the arts and woodwork when I finished secondary school and ended up in Pharmacy and commenced a Bachelor of Science degree at the Australian National University (ANU). As much as I loved health & biology and being able provide care for others; I wasn’t satisfied that I was on the right track – my heart just was not in it.

At this point I was approached by a friend in the property industry to try my hand in real estate – this is where I spent 8 years (prior to Decor Me) in various roles within the real estate, executive apartment industry ………… I do believe that everything I’ve done in my schooling, personal and work-life, prior to Decor Me, has led me to where I am today and has given me the skills and maturity to start my own business.

Starting up a new business is a pretty scary yet exciting dream, what have you learnt and would do things differently second time around?

I would probably have promoted the business long before launching, and I would have joined the fabulous tribe at ‘Mums with Hustle’ much much earlier! I have learnt so much from ‘Mums with Hustle’ and have given it my all since finding my feet in February this year. The planets aligned, and I have found my way by pushing on and believing in myself, my brand and my products.

Don’t doubt yourself, keep on keeping on.

How do you keep up with the latest trends in kid’s interiors and ensure your designs stay fresh?

I look at interior influencers and their predictions, global influences, forecasts on trends and colours, and what is happening around me. I then let the juices flow, and leave it up to imagination (get my creative on). I have so many ideas in my head but not enough time to make them!

Where do you see Décor Me in 5 years’ time?

Having a highly-efficient, highly-scalable business, and increased staff; and having my products fitted by the most renown interior designers domestically and globally.

For any would be mumpreneurs reading this blog feature, do you have any words of wisdom to help them start their journey?

Don’t give up, and believe in yourself, your brand, and your product. Be authentic, understand your WHY – and this will resonate throughout everything you do. Know your audience.

Never stop learning, work hard, and make sure you look after yourself. Something I recently adapted is that I always pop on my fave tune to get me out of mum mode and into work mode! Works a treat!

Lastly, what 5 things (apart from kids and hubby) could you not live without on a daily basis?

Biscuits containing chocolate in any form, coffee, water (I drink at least 4 litres a day!) a walk and doing something creative. Oh and a good boogie in the kitchen with my girls at any time of the day!

Angela recently had her gorgeous wooden stackers featured over at the world’s largest kids interior design studio, Petite Interior Co which is an incredible honour and a massive dream has been achieved!

I couldn’t be more thrilled and excited for Angela and with her passion for wood working and determination to succeed and provide a living for her growing family, I can only see a bright and happy future for Decor Me!
