Toy of the month – June 2016

Oh my gosh,  how have we already reached the middle of the year?!!! I can’t quite fathom how quickly this year has already gone, is anyone else feeling it? Time certainly flies and this year is certainly turning out to be a momentous one.

Luckily though I can distract you from the world changing news stories of late to share with you an utterly brilliant kids product Little Abstract art kit which was sent to me to review.

Created by South African born, Atlanta based artist Jeremy Brown, this art kit provides you with one of the coolest pieces of kids art around. Part art, part writing, part memento, part expression, together all four parts combine to give you a stunning piece of art to hang on your kids bedroom wall.

Review

The Little Abstract art kit was designed by abstract artist Jeremy Brown to provide a fun and creative project for both kids & their parents to work together to create a one-of-a-kind piece of neo-expressionist abstract art.

DSC_4345Arriving in a poster roll, this is one large piece of artwork for your child to master.

You receive archival quality print, the coolest sunglasses to bring out that expressive part when creating art, 2 hardened wax pencils, stickers and a booklet. The booklet holds the key to the art kit, it lists 20 different questions aimed at inspiring your child’s creativity and prompting them to think about themselves, life and their family and friends.

The kits come in 5 different colour combos, we chose “Color Pallet #3” (sic), although all the colour choices are gorgeous and it was tough to choose.
Little_Abstracts_art_kit2So once we unravelled the very large print, we set to answering the 22 questions in a little art/making memories session together, whilst Master H and his Papa went out for the morning.

I have to say it was a wonderful journey together to go through each question and let Master J answer each one by either writing or drawing on the paper using the coolest hardened wax pencils. To watch his thought processes and see what interested and inspired him at age 7 was certainly a beautiful experience to be a part of.

We had fun going through questions like “if you had a superpower what would it be” and “if you were famous, what would it be for? ”

But the questions also probed more in depth questioning like what are 5 words to describe yourself and write something you are scared of.
Little_Abstracts_sunglassesThe questions are a perfect mix of facts about the child like their birth date as well as learning more about them and who they are as a person.

I have to say mixing art with memories is right up there for me in terms of awesomeness for a gift. I am one of those mums who has an old vintage suitcase filled with birthday cards, baby toys, photos and the like as a memento box for when they are older. But what I really adore about this art kit, is that it’s a snapshot in time, capturing ideas and memories of your child, which may change the very next day, and showcasing it on a beautiful archival print!
The print size is HUGE, and I think the only thing con about the kit, is that people might have problems finding somewhere to hang the print, if they have more than 2 kids ( we have a small townhouse!)  But I would love to get another print for Master H and take the same snapshot in time when he is 7 years of age, so I have a gorgeous memento of both of my boys for posterity.
As extension of this fabulous art kit, I think it would be amazing to create a memento book filled with the memorable questions that Jeremy has come up with and an A4 or A3 archival print alongside it so that the child could complete their art memory collage each year. A book of memories filled from ages 6 through to 18 ( hmm would teenagers complete it!?).
In the meantime I want to get our print put onto block mounting and I can’t wait to hang it in our house.
