Toy of the month – April 2015

It has been a hectic month here in the KGT household with townhouse renovations, Master J’s 6th birthday and his Superhero party which went off with a Kapow, Bang and Zoom (photos to follow)!!

But in the midst of it all, I received a fabulous package of Darwin and Penn Kompakt cameras which I ordered in their sale last month. I had completely forgotten I had ordered them ( does this happen to anyone else?) and squealed when I opened up the package.

I am going to be using them as gifts for my “Pay it Forward” initiative. I saw them and fell in love and to be truthful I want to keep all of them for me! Ok, I will only keep one, but gosh they are just so gorgeous that it is going to be hard. Plus she has just released a limited edition Kolor Kam in gold!!

I know there are a few handmade fabric cameras on the market, of which I utterly adore but what I love about Darwin and Penn’s cameras are the colour! They are bright, bold and fun.  Although my son, being a son after my own heart, chose to model the black camera today and not the mint that was also on offer!

Darwin & Penn “Kams” are hand-painted by Nancy Blizzard who is based on the gorgeous Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne. Started in October 2014 as a creative outlet for her already brilliant photography, Nancy has currently created 3 different designs, the Original, Kompakt and Kolor.

Each camera is hand drawn with insider knowledge of the workings of a camera, then hand painted by Nancy using non- toxic pigments. After the fabric has dried, she then stuffs and hand sews up each camera.

What I adore about these toy cameras are they are lightweight and easy for a small child to use and play with, letting their imagination run wild and free. They would also look great displayed hanging up on a child’s bedroom wall.
